Charlie Vines

Life Story

Deacon Charlie Vines was born May 18, 1936 in North Carolina from the union of Jessie Geneva Boddie-Vines and Sam Vines, Sr.

Charlie attended the public schools in North Carolina. Deacon Vines accepted Christ at an erly age with the Edgecombe Baptist Church of North Carolina,He later moved to Muskegon Heights where he continued in his spiritual walk under the leadership of the late Rev. Arthur Carruthers, rev. Clardie Phifer and the Rev. James E. Witcher. He continued to serve at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, under the present pastor, Rev. Allen Ray Bolton, Sr.

He then married Gunell Cooper on June 16, 1956 in North Carolina and shortly thereafter they moved to Muskegon Heights, MI. From this union were born three beautiful children, Judy, Mochael and Maurice which he was a loving father too.

He was a member of the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Van Bus Driver, as well as a treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the senior choir and the male chorus. He Regularly visited the sick at all the local hospitals so much that he was given the name as the resident Chaplin. He had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. At the time of his transition he served as an honorary deacon. Throughtout his servitude at the New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Deacon Vines will be missed dearly.

Charles truly lived his life to the fullest through simple pleasures, by chatting and snacking with friends and family regularly. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his yard. He was employed by the grand Haven Brass Foundry for 42 years as a sand technician.

Deacon Vines leaves to cherish in his memory, wife, Gunell Vines, one daughter, Judy Vines New, Grand Prairie, TX, two sons, Michael (Kimberly) Vines, Baltimore, MD and Maurice Vines of Arlington, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Sam Vines, Sr., Jessie Geneva Boddie Vines; three brothers, Johnnie Mack, Matthew Mark, and Samuel Vines, Jr.

He also leaves to cherish his memories are three grandchildren Melita New and Edward New III of Arlington, TX; Camilla (Norman) Kelly, Houston, TX.; Six Great grandchildren Camilla, Aliyah, Keon, Keith, Zion and Lincoln. Three sisters, Dorothy B. Vines and Ernestine Vines-Paynes, and Sadie Vines-Moody of Rocky Mount, NC. Three sisters-in -Laws Minnie (James) Cooper of Newark, NJ. Artie (Matthew) Vines of Muskegon Heights, MI. and Rose (Samuel) Vines of Rocky Mount, NC. As well as a host of many family and friends.
